What Is Futsal?

Futsal is played indoors with five players on each team. The smaller playing area and faster pace mean the game is always active, with many attacking moves and goal chances.

Because of the limited space, players need good skills, creativity, and quick thinking. Matches are shorter but more intense, and there are usually more scoring opportunities compared to regular football. This makes futsal a good option for people who enjoy fast-moving sports when betting.

The sport is played all over the world, with professional leagues and international tournaments attracting futsal enthusiasts and punters from all over the world.

Futsal rules

The rules of futsal are straightforward and easy to grasp. The team can have up to 14 players, but only five are on the court at a time. The team players can come on and off whenever needed to keep the game fast and fresh.

Futsal matches are played in 80 mins, with each half lasting for 20 minutes. The clock stops when the ball is out, so every second counts. Coaches can also call a short one-minute break during each half. If it is a knockout match and the score is tied, the game can go to extra time and even penalties.

There is something called a flying goalkeeper, which the teams can do if they are on a losing streak. This is when a normal player steps in as a goalkeeper to help attack, when the team is chasing a goal.

There are four officials in charge of the game, making sure everything runs smoothly. If a player gets sent off, their team must play with one less player for two minutes, which can be a big disadvantage.

Goalkeepers can join the action outside their area, but they must follow special rules. For example, they must throw the ball back into play instead of kicking it. When the ball goes out, play restarts with a kick-in, but you cannot score directly from it.

Fouls work a bit differently in this game. After a team makes more than five fouls in one half, the other team gets a clear shot at goal. This helps keep the game fair and controlled. Futsal is quick and keeps the pace high. In most situations, players are given only 4 seconds to restart the game, so the action is constant.

Futsal positions explained

Futsal is a flexible game, and players often move around the court. However, most players have main roles depending on the team setup.

As we all know, the goalkeeper’s primary responsibility is to safeguard the goal, while also initiating attacks through quick throws. Defenders are positioned near the goal and contribute to both defending and starting the attacks.

Wingers are known for being creative and full of skill, characterized by their speed and technical proficiency. They help in both the attack and defensive phases of the game. The pivot, operating in a more advanced position, the goalscorer and often holds the ball to create chances for teammates. Some players are called universals because they can play in different positions and adapt to the needs of the team.

International futsal tournaments

Futsal has major international tournaments that attract a wide audience and teams from around the world. These events bring together the best players and teams in the sport, creating diversity and inclusion. Some of the top tournaments include:

  • UEFA Futsal Champions League.
