After years of speculation and government promises, the dream of an F1 race in South Africa may finally be closer, but 2027 is now officially off the table.

The Delay

Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie had previously indicated that South Africa could host an F1 Grand Prix in 2027. However, recent statements reveal the country underestimated what it takes to stage such a high-profile event. While plans are far from abandoned, the earliest realistic window now appears to be 2028 or 2029.

Well, next year, definitely not, because we have underestimated what is required to host the F1 event. But F1 has held our hand. So now what we are doing is we have the experts and we are putting together a bid. We give them an offer they cannot refuse, McKenzie told eNCA.

Kyalami Circuit: South Africa’s Best Hope

The historic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit, long associated with South Africa’s F1 past, is the leading candidate to host the race. Circuit owner Toby Venter says Kyalami is ninety percent ready for Formula 1 and is already undergoing minor upgrades.

To host a modern F1 race, a track must meet FIA Grade 1 standards. Kyalami has engaged Apex Circuit Design to create a roadmap toward this accreditation, covering everything from safety barriers to pit lane facilities. Once completed, the circuit could host not only F1 but other international motorsport events, raising South Africa’s profile in the global racing community.

Drivers’ Support

The push for an F1 return is not just a local dream. Several current drivers have voiced support. Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton recently stated, We cannot be adding races in other locations and continuing to ignore Africa. Hamilton’s comments underscore a broader call for the sport to embrace the continent, which has not seen an F1 race since 1993.

Betting on the Action at playTSOGO

Even though South Africa may not host its own Grand Prix in 2027, fans can still engage with the sport in other ways including online betting on F1 races. South African licensed bookmaker playTSOGO offers markets on Formula 1 events as part of its sportsbook. Bettors can place a range of wagers such as predicting race winners, podium finishes, and other driver performance outcomes across the international F1 calendar.

PlayTSOGO is regulated by the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board and accepts bets on major global sports including motorsports like Formula 1, making it a legal way for South African fans to engage with the thrill of the sport even before a local race arrives.

Looking Ahead

While 2027 is now off the table, South Africa’s commitment to bringing F1 back appears unwavering. With a team of experts working on a stronger bid, upgrades underway at Kyalami, and global drivers voicing support, the countdown to South Africa’s next Grand Prix has officially begun.

Fans will have to remain patient, but when F1 returns, the applause in Kyalami could very well match the roar of the engines on the starting grid.
