How to play snooker?

Snooker is played on a large table with six pockets. The game uses one white cue ball, 15 red balls, and six coloured balls.

When there are still red balls on the table, a player must always hit a red ball first with the cue ball. If they pot a red, they earn 1 point. After that, they can aim for any coloured ball, which is worth between 2 and 7 points depending on the colour.

If a coloured ball is potted, it is placed back on its original spot, while red balls stay in the pocket once they are potted. Players keep switching between potting red balls and coloured balls in this way.

A player continues shooting as long as they successfully pot the correct balls. If they miss a shot or make a foul, their turn ends and the other player takes over from where the balls are on the table (unless a foul changes the situation).

Once all the red balls are gone, players must pot the coloured balls in order of their value, from lowest to highest. These coloured balls are not returned to the table this time.

When all the balls have been potted, the player with the highest score wins that frame. A match is played over a set number of frames, and the player who wins the most frames wins the match.

Different types of balls

Snooker is played using balls and a long stick. The balls are all different in colours, which means different points. Let’s take a look at the value of each ball:

  • Red balls are 1 point each
  • Yellow is 2 points
  • Green is 3 points
  • Brown is 4 points
  • Blue is 5 points
  • Pink is 6 points
  • Black is 7 points

Snooker or Pool?

There’s a bit of confusion between snooker and pool, and a lot of people tend to get into debates about it. Even though they’re both cue sports, they differ in terms of gameplay.

Pool is usually played on a smaller table with larger balls and bigger pockets. This makes it easy to score the balls in the pockets, and the rounds are much quicker. It’s perfect for casual games with friends or quick matches at your favourite spot.

Snooker, on the other hand, is played on a much larger table with smaller pockets. It’s a bit of a mission to win because the pockets alone require one to be so focused and in control. The games are a bit long, slow, and need more strategy and planning, otherwise it’s also an exciting game.

In simple terms:

  • Pool is quicker, more direct, and easier to learn.
  • Snooker is more technical, strategic, and requires patience.

Both games are exciting in their own way, and many players enjoy switching between them depending on their mood.
